Villa Cavallini is located in an area called the 'Maremma', a less well known and therefore all the more intriguing part of Tuscany, which stretches south towards Latium. It is easy to believe that this wild landscape owes much of its mystique to the lingering presence of the Etruscans, remembered for their peace loving and hedonistic way of life. Over the past decade, the area has become a favourite spot for those in the know seeking the charm of the Tuscan way of life enriched by the joys of an unspoilt coastline and, in particular, the Argentario peninsula.
Villa Cavallini lies around 16km from the coast near the village of Manciano in a seemingly endless landscape of rolling hills, utterly unspoilt, spotted with cypress trees and farmhouses here and there. In a beautiful spot of the garden a good-sized swimming pool looks out over the countryside, whilst the villa itself offers guests the chance to enjoy the simplicity of country life and the seaside in a civilised and comfortable surrounding. Beyond the borders of the property, guests will discover an area rich in cultural landmarks, a beautiful countryside, good food and excellent wine.
The closest village is Manciano, some 9km from the villa. Manciano is a typically Tuscan fortified village where guests can enjoy their daily shopping with everything close at hand - including food shops, a supermarket, bank, post office, newsagent, pharmacy as well as a good local bar for a daily 'cappucino'.
Within close driving distance a number of hilltop villages - closest are Magliano and the trendy Capalbio - offer charming alternatives for the daily shopping and stopovers at the local bar.
Sovana, Sorano and Pitigliano
These three towns stand close to each other at less than 1 hour's drive from villa Cavallini. Sovana is often considered the most interesting spot in southern Tuscany, boasting a magnificent Etruscan necropolis and two remarkable Roman churches. Pitigliano is a medieval town with a dramatic location, interestingly enough with a Jewish quarter and also known for the white wine produced there, Bianco di Pitigliano.
The Tarot Garden of the artist Niki de Saint-Phalle
On one of the hills not far from Villa Cavallini the famous French artist built her "Jardin des Tarots", 22 giant sculptures in ceramic and coloured glass inspired by the figures of the magic tarot cards.
The Spas
Only around 20kms from Villa Cavallini is the famous spa of Saturnia. Tuscany is famous for its hot springs, belonging to a geothermical system that more or less encircles Monte Amiata. Saturnia is the most spectacular, with hot waterfalls in the middle of nature, open to everyone. In summer one might prefer coming here in the evening or, even better, at night.
Argentario Golf Club
The Argentario Golf Club is less than half an hour's drive away. The course is located in a protected oasis of Mediterranean maquis, with fine views across the valley to the open sea, the Orbetello lagoon and the hills of the Maremma in the distance.
